Plant Extract is a natural botanical ingredient, normally water soluble that is commonly produced as an infusion of the herb in a medium (water, alcohol etc.) that can dissolve it. A powder/viscous extract is produced by subsequently evaporating the dissolving medium while liquid extracts retain the medium. Some botanical extracts such as Green Tea and Cucumber is produced using a technology called Spray Drying which does not involve an alcohol medium. All extracts are concentrated to different degrees and are indicated as a ratio. A ratio of 5:1 indicates that 5 parts of the ingredient has been concentrated to produce 1 part of the extract. Extracts are used in the manufacture of cosmetic products at around 2 - 3%.

Extracts is obtained from different parts of the plant and have different beneficial effects when used in cosmetic formulations.
		Extracts obtained from the dried fruit/seed include amla, shikkai, pomegranate, mulberry, soapnut.
		Extracts obtained from dried leaves include green tea, bilberry, neem.
		Extracts from flowers include chamomile, calendula, rose petal, honey suckle, hops flower.
		Extracts obtained from roots include turmeric, burdock, licorice, ginger.

Nature Shop's natural botanical extracts are used for natural skin care applications as they are not standarised extracts. Standardised extracts or phytochemicals (plant chemical) concentrate a particular constituent part of the herb and is typically used in herbal supplements. Normal extracts preserve all the constituent parts of the herb in its original form. This information only serves as a guide. We recommend that you do your own research on how best these extracts will work in your formulations.

The majority of Nature Shop's natural botanical extracts are powder extracts as they offer longer shelf life, is easier to handle and offers the entire herb rather than a mild alcohol based infusion. In most cases these botanical extracts are water soluble.
