Are you concerned about the chemicals that are used in synthetic hair shampoos &
conditioners? Are you allergic to chemicals or is your scalp excessively itchy?
Treat hair gently by avoiding harsh chemical treatments, shampoos and conditioners. Consider using
pure, unprocessed & natural plant powders that are organically grown - to wash and condition your
hair? Soapnut & Amla powders are small berries that are sun-dried and powdered and used by rural
folks in South Asia as an eco-friendly washing and conditioning agent.
Nature Shop's Certified Organic Soapnut & Organic Amla powders are pure plant powders with
no additives or artificial soaping agents and have the Australian certification of
being organically grown.
Soapnut (Sapindus Trifoliatus) with its large leaves, is a deciduous tree found
in India. The dried fruit of Soapnut is most valuable part of the plant. Its fleshy
portion contains saponin, which is a good substitute for washing soap and is used
in preparation of eco-friendly shampoos and detergents.
The amount of soapnut required varies greatly from job to job but a little really does
go a long way. Below are some guidelines and you may find that you can use less.
Hair:
1 teaspoon for shoulder length hair. Make a paste with water and apply or mix in
1/4 cup water and pour over hair.
Bathing:
2-4 teaspoons in a bath
Cleaning:
2-3 teaspoons per half bucket of warm water for household cleaning
3-4 teaspoons per half bucket of warm water for more stubborn dirt
Laundry:
2-4 rounded teaspoons per load in a muslin bag
Sometimes hair will feel stiff hair after having washed with soapnut powder. This indicates
that you've used too much powder when washing (less than a teaspoon for shoulder length hair,
is needed) or you haven't rinsed it enough. Try reducing the quantity you use and/or rinsing
more until you achieve the desired results. Alternatively, a good brushing may help to reduce
the firmness and will bring out the shine too.
Your hair may go through a 'sticky' phase as it's drying but bear with it as it will feel
great once it's fully dry. Note that you can rewash hair at least once without using more
soapnut - just rinsing it will freshen and cleanse your hair. You may find that you need
to wash your hair less frequently too as any residual chemicals have been removed.
Soapnut will not be as good at removing stubborn stains from your laundry as commercial
detergents and your whites may not be as sparkling white as you're used to. This is
because soapnut doesn't have any of the artificial optical brighteners or chemical
bleaches that are included in most other washing powders. Adding an amount of natural,
eco-friendly laundry bleach to the soapnut powder in your wash will help with this.
Soapnut powder must be kept dry. Storing it in an airtight container is perfect. If the soapnut powder
is left to become damp and is a little lumpy, it will still work. The active elements in soapnut will
continue to work even if the powder has lumps. Allow the powder to dry thoroughly and crumble it in your
fingers to break it down into a powder again. A coffee grinder can also be used to break up the more stubborn
lumps if needed.
Soapnut powder is economical - a little goes a long way and does a lot.
Replacing multiple detergents, chemicals and cleaning products, soapnut's versatility
really does save money.
Eco-friendly - grown on trees, organically, to produce a biodegradable non-polluting,
versatile cleaning product.
Amla is the fruit of Emblica officinalis. It is commonly called the "Indian gooseberry"
and is an excellent conditioning herb. Amla nourishes the hair, and thickens it and is
said to penetrate the scalp and strengthen hair at its root thereby stopping and even
reversing abnormal hair loss. Additionally, Amla prevents premature greying and promotes
stronger, healthier
Usage: guidelines:

to form a paste and then smooth over hair. Rinse well.
