A powder / viscous extract is produced by subsequently evaporating the dissolving medium while liquid extracts retain the medium. Some botanical extracts are produced using a technology called Spray Drying which may not involve any alcohol medium. All extracts are concentrated to different degrees and indicated as a ratio 5:1 (concentrated 5 time) , 2:1 (concentrated twice) etc. Extracts are used in the manufacture of cosmetic products at around 2 - 3%. What is a Plant Powder - in Nature Shop's context a plant powder is an ingredient that has been produced by powdering a dried herb. The ingredient forms a paste when dissolved in water i.e its insoluble in water. These powders are for normal use by consumers or as ingredients in the manufacturer of soaps etc. What are Citrus Peel Powders - Very fine powders of dried orange and lemon peel. They are to be washed away after the gel has dried. What is Papain - Papain is a protein-cleaving enzyme derived from papaya. Papain comes in many concentrations indicated as a TU factor - the higher the TU the more concentrated is the enzyme.Papain is used as a meat tenderiser, in some pharmaceutical drugs and as food supplements. In cosmetics it used as a strong exfoliant. Spray drying (SD) is the technology used to make powdered instant coffee, milk powders etc. and it has been extended to fruit and vegetable juices/pulp. These are concentrated forms of the juice and the usage is specified by a factor called the "reconstitution ratio". This ratio specifies how much water is needed for 1 part of the powder to reconstitute the juice. There are many benefits in spray dried products, the most important being the lack of preservatives in spray dried products due to the absence of moisture in the product. Storage is another benefit - on average its shelf life is 1 year when stored in a cool, dry place. Usage benefit - you only need to reconstitute the juice on need.The expense of any spray dried product, is related to the concentration, which is indirectly indicated by the reconstitution ratio. You need to compare the price based on the measure of juice that can be produced by the powder and not on the weight of the powder.
